Four police officers in police custody for assaulting a person with a disability

The video was filmed at night on Friday, from the balcony of a building in Papeete (French Polynesia). We see four police officers surrounding a man in a wheelchair. One of the officers suddenly lifts the chair and knocks the man to the ground. He manages to sit on the ground, but the police officer who made him fall punches him in the face, causing him to fall again.

This video, which lasts less than a minute (49 seconds), was filmed in the Estall district, a disadvantaged area of the island of Tahiti. It is not contextualized but, at no time, does the person with a disability show any signs of aggression.

“Everyone has seen the video”

The four police officers were suspended and placed in police custody for violence committed against a person with a disability, filmed and broadcast on social networks, the High Commissioner of the Republic in French Polynesia and the prosecutor announced on Saturday in Papeete .

“We must respect the presumption of innocence, but everyone has seen the video,” declared the public prosecutor in French Polynesia, Solène Belaouar. I don’t know what preceded the video, but it can’t justify these actions anyway. » The prosecutor opened an investigation into intentional violence in a meeting by a custodian of public authority on a vulnerable person. The victim will soon be heard.
