four French people in the lead on the fifth Monument of the season

The last major event of the cycling season, the Tour of Lombardy takes place this Saturday October 12 between Bergamo and Como, on a 255 km route which has been modified in recent days due to heavy rain in Italy.

Triple title holder on the fifth Monument of the year, Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates) once again emerges as the overwhelming favorite for this 118th edition. Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step), double Olympic champion in Paris this summer, is Pogacar’s main rival.

On the French side, Valentin Madouas, David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) and Aurélien Paret-Peintre (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) have ambitions and can hope to appear in the final top 10.

Status quo at this stage of the race. The peloton maintains a reasonable gap but lets the twenty-two escapees climb the Valpiana with a slight lead. The Bahrain Victorious riders lead the leading group, and maintain a lead of 2 minutes 10.

    🏁 157 km

    The escapees attack the Valpiana

10 kilometers at more than 6% average for this fourth difficulty of the day! The breakaways attack the slope 2 minutes and 10 seconds ahead of the peloton. Pogacar’s teammates lead the chase.

Gaudu lucid about Pogacar’s chances of success

99% of teams think he will win. We too » assured David Gaudu at the microphone of Eurosport before the start of the race. However, the French runner wants to play all his cards so as not to regret anything.

    🏁 161 km

The peloton does not want to let go of too much ballast

1’51” gap between the escapees and the peloton which does not want to leave too much of a lead to the adventurers of the day, and even less to such a dense group.

    🏁 167km

Three Bahrain Victorious riders in the lead

The Bahraini team is best represented up front with Antonio Tiberi, Damiano Caruso and Matej Mohoric. Five teams are represented by two riders: Groupama-FDJ (Molard, Rochas), Visma – Lease a bike (Benoot, Kelderman), Movistar (Rubio, Mühlberger), INEOS Grenadiers (Arensman, Rivera) and dsm-firmenich PostNL (Tusveld, Vermaerke).

    🏁 170 km

    The counterattack is getting closer

As they approach the Berbenno pass, the gap between the first two groups drops to less than 30 seconds. We could soon see a junction in the next few kilometers, even if some people could be tempted to attack.

    🏁 173 km

This time, the peloton slowed down considerably. The leader of the race now has a lead of 2’30”, while the pursuers are still stuck at 50 seconds.

    🏁 178 km

Equal play between the three levels

It’s still going strong in the breakaway, and the 11 pursuers aren’t making any gains. The peloton is 1’10” from the lead as we approach the Berbenno pass.

    🏁 183 km

UAE Emirates does not let slip

Tadej Pogacar’s team sets a good pace at the head of the peloton, while the 12 escapees do not wait for the counter-attack, within which the understanding is far from perfect.

    🏁 186 km

There is a 35-second gap between the leader of the race and the group of counter-attackers. In the event of a junction, there would be 23 of them opening the road on the Tour of Lombardy.

    🏁 191 km

    Bastien Tronchon on the counterattack

The Frenchman from Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale is in a second place in the race, alongside Brandon Rivera (INEOS Grenadiers). A group of nine riders, including Rudy Molard (Groupama-FDJ) and Tiesj Benoot (Visma – Lease a bike) came out against.

    🏁 193 km

The battle lasted many kilometers since leaving Bergamo to take the breakaway. There are currently 12 at the front, including the French Axel Laurance (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Rémy Rochas (Groupama-FDJ) and Julien Bernard (Lidl-Trek).

⭐ Tadej Pogacar, the big favorite

The Slovenian crushed the 2024 season with all his superiority, already totaling 24 successes before hoping to maintain his property during the Tour of Lombardy. The world champion has never been stronger, playing with his opponents and the records and forcing us to question such sovereignty.

COMMENT. With Tadej Pogacar, is cycling dying?
