Four complaints for “involuntary homicide” filed against the Remiront hospital

Complaints against the hospital in Remiront (Vosges) are piling up. On December 20, the Epinal prosecutor’s office already confirmed that four complaints had been filed against the hospital, including three for “manslaughter” and one for endangering the lives of others, after the deaths of three patients. But, according to France Infothis Thursday, a new family indicated the wish to file a complaint for manslaughter, after the unexplained death of a relative, thus bringing to five the number of complaints against the health establishment.

The four patients, aged 51, 59, 67 and 78, died four years apart, between 2018 and July 2022.

Deaths unexplained to families

Two of them had entered the hospital for a fractured femur and had been taken care of by “the same surgeon and the same anesthesiologist”, one in July 2020, the other two years later, specified December 20 Me Nancy Risacher. However, for one of them, “the operation went well” and she had to “go to a rehabilitation center” on the day of her death, July 29, according to the lawyer.

“We do not know the exact causes of death, we are told the consequences”, namely a “multi-visceral failure”, according to Me Nancy Risacher. For the council, the two women died in the “same nebulous circumstances”. The third patient had been brought to the emergency room in May 2022 and had died “a few days after acute pancreatitis”, added the lawyer.

The new complaint, which is expected to be filed later this week, relates to the death of a 51-year-old woman. According to BFM TV, in 2018, the patient arrived at the hospital for severe pain in the lower abdomen. He was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis, which led to hospitalization and follow-up by an oncologist. However, the patient will die three days later, without any explanation being provided to her husband and his relatives.

Hospital management “sorry about the situation”

The Epinal prosecution has opened a judicial investigation “against X for manslaughter”, indicated on December 20 the public prosecutor, Frédéric Nahon.

The management of the hospital, “sorry about the situation”, availed itself of “support according to the rules of the art”, declared the same day the director, Dominique Cheveau. According to him, these complaints will make it possible to shed light on the facts: “we only ask to understand what happened”, added the director. The Regional Health Agency (ARS) Grand-Est affirms for its part that “the subject is under investigation”.
