Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen starts the sprint race in Austin from first place. The Red Bull driver narrowly left Monegasque Charles Leclerc in his Ferrari behind at the Circuit of the Americas. Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton came third in qualifying for the sprint on Sunday night in Germany (midnight/Sky).

For Nico Hülkenberg, however, it was the next disappointment. In 16th place, the sprint qualification was over after the first section for the Rhinelander in the Haas racing car. His team’s hopes for a comprehensive package of new components for the car have not yet been fulfilled, at least in Texas.

Verstappen had already clinched his third world title two weeks ago in Qatar. However, in qualifying for the main race in Austin, the 26-year-old made a driving mistake on Friday and his best time was canceled because he briefly went off the track. Therefore, Verstappen only starts the Grand Prix on Sunday (9 p.m./Sky) from sixth place. Leclerc took pole position.
