Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has secured his first pole position since returning to Formula 1 Las Vegas secured.
In qualifying on the floodlit course, the Monegasque relegated his teammate Carlos Sainz to second place, although he was given a grid penalty of ten places the day before. It was Leclerc’s fifth pole of the season and 23rd overall.
World champion Max Verstappen in the Red Bull came third after an unspectacular qualification, but he moved up one position because of Sainz’s penalty. Record world champion Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes and Haas driver Nico Hülkenberg were eliminated early. Formula 1 had previously raced in Las Vegas in 1981 and 1982.
