For the return of the charity marathon, the guest list creates unease

Two years after the “flop edition”, which had nevertheless broken a donation record, the ZEvent charity marathon is back! And after skipping a year to rethink the format, small changes were expected. Exit the big Twitch game party in Montpellier, the list of big streamers on site is reduced to 36 names who will meet from September 6 to 8, after a concert on Thursday, September 5 at the Zénith in Montpellier.

But the big news is the opening of the event to 100 remote streamers, who are not personally invited but selected for their audience. After a registration period for those interested, the “100 streams with the most hours viewed over the last 365 days” were validated. “No special treatment or invitations,” the organization trumpets. Except that by playing the open door, the event ends up with some unsavoury profiles on its list, as several Internet users have pointed out.

Racism, harassment and child pornography on the menu

The most telling case is probably that of LaSainte. The streamer, who has nearly 38,000 followers on Twitch, was formerly known on Twitter as LaChofaSympa. Multiple screenshots show fatphobic and racist remarks. In 2018, she posted a photo of Adolf Hitler accompanied by the comment “when the SNCF does Black Friday”, and made numerous jokes about the crematoria at Auschwitz.

Several Internet users point out that she also claimed to be a member of the far-right collective Némesis and mocked those “on welfare” live, while the charity marathon is organized this year in favor of associations such as Secours populaire. A former classmate also mentions transphobic remarks.

The presence of streamer Zoltan also caused a stir. He was notably denounced for having incited the harassment of another streamer, who testifies having received feedback from Twitch France moderation acknowledging that “Zoltan is a borderline streamer, and that he is very often on the verge of being banned”.

Other names are causing concern, such as that of Aypierre, who allegedly incited harassment after the revelations about the working conditions around the Minecraft QSMP serverand Farod, suspected of having threatened a woman who had reported him for a rape before retracting. Catboat is meanwhile cited for hosting child pornography content on his community’s Discord server. So many names that almost make us forget the presence of TheGreatReview, accused of plagiarism a few months ago, an affair that had shaken the Internet bubble.

No background check

It is an understatement to say that there is a lot of consternation in the communities usually involved in the event. “If nothing changes, I will not donate to the event,” one Internet user told us privately. In the past, the presence of Sardoche, notably accused of making misogynistic remarks, at ZEvent or at ZLan, another event organized by Zerator, had already sparked debate. Zerator then explained the impossibility of excluding someone who had not been sanctioned, neither by Twitch nor by the courts.

However, other charity events organized on the platform, such as Speedons for the benefit of Médecins du Monde or Furax for associations fighting against sexist and sexual violence, carry out verification work on their participants, in order to ensure that they represent the values of the event. A “background check” that was clearly not carried out by ZEvent.
