The local authorities in the Chinese metropolis of Shanghai have reported the first corona deaths since the start of a large-scale lockdown in the city. It was about three elderly people with underlying diseases, as the city administration announced.

Shanghai has been under lockdown since late March. About 25 million people have been ordered to stay at home. Recently there have been reports on internet platforms about protests due to food shortages and forced resettlements.

More than 20,000 new infections every day

In the past few weeks, the authorities had built hundreds of isolation facilities with tens of thousands of beds to house the infected. The number of daily infections had recently exceeded 20,000 – a huge number for China, which had largely been spared the pandemic in the past two years due to strict isolation.

Despite the wave of infections, the authorities in Shanghai had assured up to this point that there were no corona deaths.
