Mason Greenwood, the Manchester United footballer suspended since February by his club, was charged on Saturday with “attempted rape” and “wilful assault”, announced the British prosecution.
The magistrates clarified that these counts relate to one and the same victim and that the 21-year-old player will appear for the first time in court on Monday.

Greenwood, one of English football’s greatest hopefuls, was arrested in late January after photos and videos were posted on social media showing a young woman with a bloody face and bruises on her body, with the caption ” to anyone who wants to know what Mason Greenwood is really doing to me.”
First placed in police custody, accused of rape and assault, he was released under judicial supervision in early February, then immediately suspended by his club. He has not played an official match since.
On Saturday morning he was arrested by Greater Manchester Police for breaching his judicial review, prompting these new charges and his arraignment in court on Monday.
