Football European Championship 2024: This is what the cities are paying for the European Championship

The 2024 European Football Championship will cost the cities hosting matches millions. In total, Berlin, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart are investing more than 292 million euros in stadiums, security and fan festivals.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior is overall satisfied with the start of the European Football Championship. The initial assessment is positive, “the security measures are working,” said the ministry’s spokesman, Maximilian Kall, on Monday in Berlin. Of course, there have been incidents like the one in Gelsenkirchen, including incidents involving hooligans.

Security also a cost factor at the European Football Championship

However, the police dealt with the situation there quickly, partly because they were well prepared. On Sunday afternoon, there was a clash between Serbian and English fans in the city center of the North Rhine-Westphalian city.

The spokesman said that it was already clear before the opening match on Friday that the European Championships, with around twelve million guests, would be a “major security challenge.” He pointed out that in addition to the state police officers, 22,000 federal police officers are deployed daily for the European Championships. This contributes to the fact that security is a major cost factor in all host cities.
