Food – tax cut popular – economy

A large majority of Germans are in favor of VAT exemption for staple foods. This is the result of a recent Yougov survey. 77 percent of the participants are therefore in favor of reducing the VAT for food such as fruit, vegetables and legumes to zero. 15 percent reject this, 8 percent made no statement. Social and consumer associations had asked the federal government last week to use new EU rules and set VAT to zero percent for food such as fruit and vegetables. Federal Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir (Greens) supported the demands. The Federal Environment Agency also called for a general abolition of VAT for plant-based foods at the weekend.
