Apple also announces a new MacBook Pro

Apple also took advantage of the event to announce an update to the MacBook Pro range, integrating the new M3 chips. Users now have the choice between a 14-inch MacBook Pro equipped with the M3, M3 Pro, or M3 Max chips, and a larger 16-inch model, available only with the M3 Pro or M3 Max options.

On another note, Apple has decided to end production of the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. This withdrawal marks the end of a functionality which, although innovative at its launch, has not really been able to convince all users over the years. For some, this removal was predictable, and it is time for Apple to turn the page.

M3 chips are progressing everywhere!

This time, Apple changes the situation and decides to launch the M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips simultaneously, breaking with the tradition of first introducing the basic version before its more advanced versions.

True to its reputation, Apple showed off a series of impressive graphics showing the performance improvements brought by the M3 chips in various areas, including the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. These graphs highlight the progress made over previous generations of M1 and M2 chips, while also providing a subtle but clear comparison to Intel’s chips, although they are not explicitly named. Apple is clearly looking to show that its M3 chips are not only an improvement over their predecessors, but also a force to be reckoned with in the overall processor industry.

The keynote begins: Apple M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max

Apple’s conference began in a Halloween atmosphere, plunging Apple Park into a mysterious and captivating mist. The rumors have been confirmed: the new MacBook Pro and the long-awaited M3 chip are at the heart of this event. After an enthusiastic introduction from Tim Cook, it was the turn of Johny Srouji, the senior vice president in charge of hardware architecture, to take the stage.

Well, Johny Srouji really knew how to keep everyone in suspense! He revealed Apple’s all-new M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips, and they’re all made with hyper-modern 3-nanometer technology.

As usual, the Apple Store has temporarily lowered its virtual curtain in anticipation of the launch of the new Macs. This is at least one tradition that continues at Apple.

A look back at the evolution of Apple processors

To trace the recent evolution of Apple processors, it is important to note that the M2 range was inaugurated in 2022. This new generation of chips has been integrated into a variety of products such as the iPad Pro, the 13-inch MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air, the Mac Mini, and even the Vision Pro, to name a few. Apple unveiled the M2 chip in June 2022 at the WWDC conference, highlighting its new 5-nanometer N5P manufacturing technology developed by TSMC and its 20 billion transistors, 25% more than the M1 chip.

A few months later, in January 2023, Apple released the more advanced M2 Pro and M2 Max versions (for the MacBook Pro 14 and 16), with the M2 Max offering even more power for users needing maximum performance. And in June 2023, at WWDC 2023, Apple took it a step further with the M2 Ultra on the Mac Pro and Mac Studio, which actually combines two M2 Max chips into one.

Meet at 1 a.m. (Paris)

What are the issues and products we can expect for Apple’s nighttime event in Europe?

The main interest lies in the potential presentation of the new Apple M3 chip, accompanied by its variations and associated Macs. Apple is likely to unveil the new M3 Pro and M3 Max MacBook Pro models, available in 14- and 16-inch sizes, integrating up to 16 CPU cores and up to 40 GPU cores for exceptional performance . However, it is probably premature to expect the MacBook Air M3s to be released on this occasion. The question remains open as to the possibility of seeing an iMac equipped with the M3 or M2 chip.

To get the end of the story and discover all the new features, meet at 1 a.m. on Frandroid, on this special day that is Halloween.

What we expect from the keynote

During this keynote, we are obviously awaiting many technical details on the Apple M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips. The latter in particular should take your breath away in terms of power. It is rumored in particular that we would find a CPU with 16 cores (12 high-performance cores and 4 energy-saving cores) and a GPU made up of 32 to 40 cores.

In the process, we should see the first products taking advantage of said chips. New MacBook Pros could be on the program while a renewal of the iMac is also hoped for since it is the last product still based on an Apple M1. But it could also be that the firm waits until 2024 for this device. For MacBook Airs, it seems even less likely to see a new model presented tonight.
