Fluctuations in the grid: nationwide power failure in Pakistan

Status: 01/23/2023 08:55 a.m

Fluctuations in the power grid have paralyzed the energy supply throughout Pakistan. According to the government, the blackout will be resolved – but the electricity sector remains ailing.

In Pakistan, the power supply collapsed across the country early in the morning. According to the Pakistan Energy Ministry, it could take up to 12 hours for the power outage to be resolved in all parts of the country. The reason for the collapse were fluctuations in the power grid.

Currently, power generation is off at night due to lower consumption during the cool months. According to the Ministry of Energy, when generation was restarted in the morning hours, fluctuations occurred that ultimately paralyzed the power grid.

Country suffers from economic crisis

The blackout also affected the metropolitan areas of Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar. According to the Ministry of Energy, the power supply should be restored in some parts of the country. The authorities called on the population not to panic. Power cuts are more common in Pakistan – but not that all major cities are cut off from the supply at the same time.

The risk of blackouts has increased in the South Asian country over the years: the energy sector is highly indebted. In addition, the country is in the midst of a severe economic crisis. The state cannot raise the financial means to ensure the operation of the oil and gas power plants. In addition, insufficient investments were made in the infrastructure and power lines.
