Former world-class rower Peter-Michael Kolbe has died, according to the German Rowing Association.

Former world-class rower Peter-Michael Kolbe has died, according to the German Rowing Association.

The former world champion died at the age of 70 in a nursing home Lübeck, as the DRV confirmed to the German Press Agency with reference to a close friend of Kolbe’s who looked after him until the end. The “Hamburger Abendblatt” first reported on it.

During his active time, Kolbe was one of the world’s best single rowers. In total he won five world championship titles. He won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in 1976, 1984 and 1988. In 1975, Kolbe was voted “Sportsman of the Year”.

After his active career, he worked for the German Rowing Association and was, among other things, sports director.
