With a clear majority, people in Switzerland have spoken out in favor of marriage for all. Critics tried to use the referendum to prevent a change in the law that had already been passed by parliament.

In the referendum in Switzerland, a majority voted in favor of marriage for everyone. After counting 19 of the 26 cantons, 62.1 percent of those entitled to vote were in favor of opening up marriage to same-sex couples.

Swiss vote for “marriage for all” according to initial projections

In the polls before the referendum, a large majority had already emerged in favor of the new regulation, which already exists in most Western European countries. The government has yet to determine when the change in the law will come into force.

Critics wanted to prevent the law

Homosexuality has not been punished in Switzerland since 1942. However, numerous regional police stations still kept so-called “gay registers” until the 1990s. At the beginning of 2020 homophobia was made a criminal offense in Switzerland, the Swiss parliament then passed a resolution in favor of homosexual marriage.

Critics, who mainly come from conservative backgrounds, initiated the referendum in order to prevent the corresponding law. This provides that same-sex couples can adopt children together. Lesbian women can also be artificially fertilized in a homosexual partnership.
