First eruption of the year for the Piton de la Fournaise in Reunion

Nearly a year after its last eruption, the Piton de la Fournaise woke up this Sunday around 8:30 a.m., said the Volcanological Observatory of Piton de la Fournaise (OVPF). According to the OVPF, “the eruptive fissure(s) opened on the eastern flank of the volcano”. The eruption is located in “a totally uninhabited area, with no particular threat to the safety of people, property or the environment”, note the volcanologists.

Located in the south-east of Reunion, Piton de la Fournaise is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It has erupted about twenty times over the past ten years. His last awakening dates back to September 19, 2022. The eruption had lasted 16 days. The eruptions of the La Réunion volcano are described as effusive or Hawaiian type. Most of the lava flows over the surface of the volcano, unlike explosive eruptions that spit clouds of ash high into the sky.
