Saturday morning, a fire broke out within the Galloo company, in Aniche, between Douai and Valenciennes in the North, we learned from the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS). This Sunday, the firefighters were still fighting against the residual outbreaks.

The rescue intervention was triggered at 2:30 am on Saturday in the metal recovery company located on rue Delestraint, in Aniche. For a reason that is not yet determined, the flames began to ravage scrap metal and vehicle wrecks stacked 5 to 6 m high over an area of around 3,000 m2.

The risk of air and water pollution is eliminated

Very important resources were dispatched to the site, around forty machines and 90 men from the SDIS of Nord and Pas-de-Calais. The fire was contained to prevent it from spreading to nearby establishments. It was not until around 11:30 a.m., or 9 a.m. later, that the firefighters were able to contain the fire. It took 6 water lances with a total flow of nearly 600 m3 per hour. The work of the firefighters continued all night from Saturday to Sunday with a lightened but still important device.

Readings were carried out on several occasions in the fumes and the results “did not reveal any problem linked to air pollution”, according to the SDIS. As the company is equipped with a water retention system, the risk of pollution “is also eliminated”. The incident did not cause any casualties.
