Fifa President Gianni Infantino: It’s harder for real autocrats – opinion

Criminal investigations may also be under way against Gianni Infantino, but that doesn’t bother FIFA officials. They confirm the Swiss as their president. A scandal? Sure, but in a completely different place.

Neither the United Nations nor any other concerned organization sent election monitors to Kigali to assess the legitimacy of Gianni Infantino’s re-election. This distinguishes the autocrat at the head of the world football association (Fifa) from his fellow presidents in semi-democracies and sham democracies: Infantino does not have to manipulate votes to stay in office. According to the statutes, he only had to accept the thunderous applause of the delegates at the Fifa congress in Rwanda and he was confirmed for another four years in the highest football office. There were no opposing candidates.
