Before each performance at the Theaterformen festival in Hanover, the audience is told that they will be attending a relaxation performance. What is relaxing about it is that noises and movements from the audience are expressly welcome. Also, no one should hesitate to leave and return. The festival emphasizes breaking down barriers for people with disabilities, and sitting still can be a barrier for people with Tourette’s, chronic pain or learning disabilities. Not a single person leaves their seat in the first four productions of the ten-day festival, and the halls are quiet, as always in German theatres, unless there is a cough. But this announcement is also more of a mission.
