Fenerbahce: Mesut Özil pissed off after being substituted for Antwerp

Mesut Özil had to leave the pitch against Antwerp after 66 minutes. The 2014 world champion obviously didn’t like that at all.

Fenerbahce star Mesut Özil reacted angrily to his substitution in the Europa League game against Royal Antwerp on Thursday evening (2-2). The midfielder initially left the field reluctantly at Ulker Stadyumu in the middle of the second half. When he got outside he kicked several water bottles before he took off his jersey and threw it on the floor.

Coach Vitor Pereira, with whom Özil is now said to have a tense relationship, had ordered him from the field in the 66th minute after a poor performance. Özil hadn’t succeeded in shooting on goal and the assist specialist couldn’t see any good passes either.

Fenerbahce: Newcastle rumors about Mesut Özil

Pereira said afterwards: “We needed more intensity and fresh blood. Mesut did well and he is strong when he has the ball. However, we struggled to maintain possession.” The Portuguese also stated that he didn’t know “what would have happened if I hadn’t replaced him”. The Portuguese did not comment on Özil’s behavior after the substitution.

It is not Özil’s first reaction of this kind in recent weeks. Recently, because of his disregard in the league game against Kasimpasa (2-1) furiously, a camisole thrown in the direction of Pereiras. He let him warm up for 40 minutes before he didn’t bring him into play. The sports newspaper Fanatics then wrote of a “shock reaction” from the ex-gunner.

Özil joined Fenerbahce on a free transfer from Arsenal last winter. This season, the game designer played eleven games for the leaders of the Süper Lig. He scored three goals and one assist.

The last rumors had surfaced the nouveau riche Newcastle United want to bring the 33-year-old back into the Premier League. Özil’s contract runs until 2024.
