Female consent to sexual acts, a history of women

In this episode of our meeting ” Everything is explained », Which is interested in sexuality and society, we talk about female consent to sexual acts, generally considered to be the guarantee of equality between women and men. The guest is Maëlle Bernard, author ofHistory of female consent to the editions
Arkhe (18.50 euros).

What recognition of sexual violence by justice?

The term consent has spread in France with #MeToo, the movement for the liberation of women’s speech launched after the Weinstein affair, in October 2017. A break after centuries of silence, centuries during which the sexuality of women, their virginity, their submission to the desire of the bridegroom, represented their unit of measure in society. A theme, and historical research, which echoes the recent The Conversation of the Sexes – Philosophy of Consent by the philosopher Manon Garcia (Climats).

What definitions of consent? Since the release of the voice of women on sexual and gender-based violence, can we say that “everything is fine”? Why does the 18th century represent a break? These are some of the questions in this exchange.

Finally, remember that each year, around 90,000 women are raped in France, which represents approximately one rape every seven minutes. And 10% of women claiming to be raped file a complaint. You can listen to the entire interview with Maëlle Bernard above and on all online listening platforms.
