Steinmeier wants to award more women with the Order of Merit in the future – he plans a quota of at least 40 percent. This is “a way to give more women the recognition they deserve,” said the Federal President.

The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany is to be awarded to women more frequently in the future: Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is introducing a women’s quota of “at least 40 percent” for the award, as the Office of the Federal President announced. So far, only about every third order of merit has been awarded to a woman – “although women and men are equally involved in our society,” as the office emphasized.

“Women achieve great things in our society,” said Steinmeier. “Whether in clubs, companies, at universities or in culture – women ensure cohesion, humanity, progress and creativity.”

Steinmeier asks for suggestions

Steinmeier called on citizens to nominate more women for the order. “Look around, in your neighborhood, in your free time, at your colleagues. The Order of Merit lives on the suggestions I get from you for the award of the Federal Cross of Merit.”

The award is a way “to give more women the recognition they deserve,” stressed the Federal President.

Distinguished citizen award

The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic, for which there are different levels, is awarded to citizens who have rendered outstanding service in the political, economic, social, intellectual, cultural or social sphere.

The undoped award recognizes achievements for the common good in Germany. Anyone can submit suggestions. They are checked by the state and senate chancellery of the federal states. The individual states then submit their proposals to the Federal President.
