FC Bayern: Why is Kimmich allowed to play unvaccinated in a 2G stadium? – Sports

In the USA, basketball player Kyrie Irving is no longer allowed to go into the hall without vaccination, but Bayern player Kimmich is allowed to play in a 2-G stadium. That sounds absurd, but it isn’t.

Basketball player Kyrie Irving, who earns his living in the US NBA league, is currently banned from playing basketball because he is not vaccinated. And so the questions are obvious: Can this also happen to the unvaccinated footballer and Bayern player Joshua Kimmich?

As is so often the case, it is worth taking a look at the details. Irving plays for a club that has its home games in upstate New York. There you are not allowed to enter a sports hall without vaccination, which excludes Irving from home games. There is no vaccination requirement from the league, so he should be able to do his job in another state. The case is controversial in the United States.

Now the fact that Kimmich is not vaccinated also leads to difficult situations in Germany – for example in Leverkusen, where the 2-G rule applies on the stadium stands but the 3-G rule applies on the lawn. In New York no distinction is made between spectators and professionals, but in Germany there is. As unusual as it sounds in this context, Kimmich is an employee of FC Bayern. And a 2-G rule in the workplace doesn’t even apply to medical professions. It’s hard to argue why professional footballers should be an exception.

FC Bayern can only intervene to a limited extent. There have been several consultations, one generally advises vaccination, says the club. That is plausible, because it is very much in the club’s interest that as many players as possible have themselves vaccinated. If only because Kimmich would have to be in quarantine for 14 days with a positive corona test and could be absent for up to six games. If he had been vaccinated, if he remained symptom-free, he could take a break on the fifth day.

The crucial point is: There is no compulsory vaccination in Germany. And that’s why Kimmich must have the opportunity to practice his profession. How FC Bayern thinks that, or how spectators who are tested and are not allowed into the stadium, that is another debate.
