FC Bayern: Niklas Süle explains his absence from the Wolfsburg game

Nagelsmann is sorry

National player Niklas Süle has explained his much-discussed renunciation of FC Bayern Munich’s last game of the season. Coach Julian Nagelsmann had previously been publicly quoted as saying that Süle had not been taken to Wolfsburg “because he had not prepared for it.” In an interview with “Sport Bild”, the 26-year-old central defender, who moved in the summer is transferred to Borussia Dortmund free of charge, now position.

“That is not right. Things were said about me last weekend that just didn’t add up. You know: Last Thursday, Julian Nagelsmann asked me if it would be okay if I wasn’t in the squad against Wolfsburg. He wanted to reward young players who are at Bayern next season and let them go first. So there is no place for me in the squad. I accepted that because I understood the decision. So it was a decision of the coaching team, who for understandable reasons didn’t want me in the squad. On Friday, when Marcel Sabitzer was injured, shortly before departure, one of our assistant coaches said that I could come along if I wanted to. But it’s okay if not. That was the story,” says Süle.

Süle further reports that Coach Nagelsmann had already apologized in the run-up to the championship celebration at Marienplatz in the presence of the other players for the faulty and non-transparent communication of the previous days: “By the way, before the championship celebration on Sunday, when we were all together, Julian Nagelsmann before the told the entire team that I did nothing wrong and that he was sorry for what was being done to me with this story. Everyone from the team and from the team around it know that I would never have let them down.” Nevertheless, Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß had severely criticized the absence of the central defender on Sunday. “That doesn’t exactly speak for the player. When he talks about appreciation, I would say he didn’t appreciate the club. I found this action catastrophic,” said the 70-year-old.

Süle on lack of appreciation at FC Bayern: “No billing”

Süle confirmed earlier statements in the “Sport Bild” regarding the feeling of a lack of appreciation on the part of the club. He didn’t want to “step down” on his employer, but that was his personal feeling: “I think I’ve been able to show that with 14 titles I’ve played my part in FC Bayern’s successful history. When looking at the overall picture, you shouldn’t forget the difficult moments: I came in in the 2020 Champions League final against Paris in the 25th minute after a cruciate ligament tear. Hansi Flick placed his trust in me as a coach. I didn’t feel that trust at all levels in the club. At that time I quickly realized: Okay, you have a certain standing in the team, with the club employees and the fans – I didn’t feel that from the club management. That’s what’s really important to me, no late nights. And no billing either. I just want to explain how I felt. At that time, I just noticed that I lacked the appreciation and that I wanted to do something new.”

BVB new signing Süle on champion ambitions: “Otherwise I wouldn’t have done it”

Despite the imminent farewell to top striker Erling Haaland, Süle is convinced that Dortmund have a chance of winning the championship next season. “Those responsible showed me that next season we will have a squad with which it is absolutely possible to become German champions,” he said. “Otherwise I wouldn’t have done it.”
