Favorites of the week: Because life must go on – Culture

“Shogun”, the best series of the year, continues. A western novel from 1959 has finally been translated, and John Oliver looks at the AfD – this week’s recommendations from the SZ Feuilleton.

Series: Acting in “Shogun”

You’d actually like to think it’s stupid what the US production company FX has just announced: Their historical series “Shōgun”, set in Japan around 1600 and available in Germany on the streaming service Disney+, will be continued – although it was previously a completed miniseries. “Shōgun” is the film adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 bestselling novel of the same name, and the last episode ended a few weeks ago exactly where the book ends. The story is over, you might think. But of course that’s naive, given the series’ enormous success: critics were enthusiastic and quickly named it the best series of the year. “Shōgun” is considered one of the favorites for the US television awards, the “Emmys”, in categories from costume design to acting to “Best Drama Series”. And the viewing figures are apparently good too. So, that’s the rule of the entertainment industry, it must go on.
