Freezing rain and ice are causing danger on the roads in Lower Saxony, Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The extreme weather resulted in a fatal accident on the A27.
The police in Lower Saxony report many accidents – although the situation varies from region to region: In the north and north-west it has now calmed down, they say. Around 25 accidents were counted in the area of the Oldenburg police headquarters between Verden, Cloppenburg and Cuxhaven. There are around 50 in the Osnabrück-Emsland-Grafschaft Bentheim area. A serious accident occurred further east, on the A27 motorway near Walsrode-Hamwiede. A 25-year-old driver died there after losing control of his vehicle on a slippery road, crashing through the guardrail and hitting a tree.
Around 220 accidents in the Hanover region
According to the helpers, there have been around 220 accidents on mirror-smooth roads in the Hanover region since midnight. According to the police, most accidents occurred in southern Lower Saxony. There had already been a rear-end collision between Kassel and Göttingen, just before the Drammetal motorway junction, during the night. The freeway was temporarily closed. Numerous accidents were also reported from Braunschweig.
Train runs slower because of black ice
The smoothness also causes restrictions in local traffic: for example, bus traffic in Salzgitter and Wolfenbüttel had been stopped until the morning. Also in Goettingen, Hann. Münden and Holzminden have canceled many buses. Long-distance trains are sometimes delayed because the train says it has to slow down due to the freezing rain and the slippery surface. Current timetable information Deutsche Bahn offers on its website. The German Weather Service (DWD) warns that drivers should not rely solely on winter tires. Among other things, anticipatory driving and sufficient distance are important. If possible, staying outdoors and unnecessary trips should be avoided at the moment.
Hamburg: The gym becomes a sighting point for surgical emergencies
Ice accidents were also reported from Hamburg, as reported by NDR 90.3. Ambulance services are deployed throughout the city. In the Bergedorf district, a driver drove into parked vehicles in the morning, and in the city center a driver rammed a post. By 10:15 a.m., there had already been more than 200 road accidents and falls on mirror-smooth surfaces, it said. A gymnasium will be set up on Budapester Strasse as a central medical screening point for surgical emergencies.
Mirror-smooth streets in Schleswig-Holstein
The emergency services have also reported a number of accidents from Schleswig-Holstein. According to information from NDR 1 Welle Nord, for example, a truck slipped into the ditch on the B430 near Plön. There was an accident in Büdelsdorf, two cars crashed into each other in Jörl, and there were also a few crashes around Lübeck. In the greater Niebüll area in North Friesland, the Autokraft buses no longer run because it is too slippery.
