Exploit from Bordeaux-Bègles to Toulon in Top 14

While the RCT barely held on to a victory at home (32-30), the Bordelais went with great ambition and determination to achieve an exploit in the last minutes at Mayol thanks to a try signed by their young three -quarterback center Nicolas Depoortere (77th), symbol of a Gironde team which has found the right balance between conquest and offensive, “fighting intensity” and “running intensity” to use current terminology.

The Bordelais first took particular care of their half-time starts. From the thirtieth second, the supersonic winger Madosh Tambwe recovered a ball dropped by the Var attack to spin alone for the try after an eighty-meter race. Then, at the start of the second half, Romain Latterrade, a replacement hooker who came in to energize his team, enhanced the work of the Gironde pack to plant the ball into the Toulon in-goal (52nd). At that point, the score was 22-20 in favor of the RCT and nothing was decided.

Aside from Tambwe’s stab, the first period was generally to the advantage of the Toulonnais, less clumsy than their opponents. In force, pillar Beka Gigashvili (13th), Leicester winger Fainga’anuka (27th) and third-line center Selevasio Tolofua (39th) played defense to score and put their team in the lead, 22- 13. The Varois then thought they had done the hard part, but the UBB was not an expiatory victim. Ambitious in the game, the Girondins came back to 22-20.

This return to the score boosted the Toulonnais who, with a strong collective acceleration started in front and ended off wide with a pass to the foot of Dan Biggar for the double from Fainga’anuka (57th), took off a little (29-20). But that was without counting on the offensive register of the UBB: Tambwe recovered the ball, counter-attacked, found the impeccable Mateo Garcia who feinted and shifted his rear Romain Buros for the try under the posts (67th) which allowed for his team to regain the lead (29-30). Before Nicolas Depoortere sealed the feat, three minutes from the end.
