Exiles, refugees… The activist Sophie-Anne Bisiaux debunks preconceived ideas on migration

Are there more and more migrants? To prevent migration, should the borders be closed? What is the difference between exiles, refugees and migrants? Every day, new news reporting the deaths of hundreds of migrants in shipwrecks at sea makes the headlines. When it is not a question of the dismantling of refugee camps or of push-backs at the borders. Almost daily events further exacerbate the debate around the “migration crisis” and the integration of refugees in their host country.

So, to respond to received ideas, often far removed from reality, the activist Sophie-Anne Bisiaux, specialized in foreigners’ law at Migreurop, agreed to “debunk”, for 20 minutes, four preconceived ideas on migration.

To “put an end to misconceptions”

“We know that the figure of the scapegoat is always very effective in the political field, when we talk about migration,” explains Sophie-Anne Bisiaux. Sometimes unscrupulous politicians, ready to let false ideas circulate to support their remarks. The researcher therefore decided to join forces with associations and collectives of States General on Migration. Result: 60 misconceptions about migration deciphered and deconstructed in a single book entitled Put an end to misconceptions and migration.
