Germany continues its series. At the ESC 2023, Lord of the Lost unfortunately only reached last place.

Once again, Germany did poorly at the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). Lord of the Lost took last place behind Great Britain and Serbia with their song “Blood & Glitter”. Meanwhile, Loreen (39) from Sweden was happy about her victory.

Surprising intro to the ESC evening

Princess Kate (41) caused the first big surprise of the evening at the beginning of the show. At the opening, Prince William’s wife (40) performed a clip with last year’s Ukrainian winner Kalush Orchestra and other stars such as composer Andrew Lloyd Webber (75). Although the next ESC usually takes place in the winning country, the English city of Liverpool hosted the major music event in 2023 due to the war.

Along with the Chemical Brothers and Eurythmics, the acts from the 26 participating countries gradually entered the stage of the M&S Bank Arena in starting order. The duo Teya & Salena from Austria made the start, the German contribution Lord of the Lost showed – appropriately rocking – to Blur’s “Song 2”.

With their song “Who The Hell Is Edgar?” Teya & Salena opened the competition. A “refreshing start”, as the German ESC voice Peter Urban (75) found. The commentator hosted the broadcast for the 25th and last time this year. After the contributions from Portugal, Switzerland, Poland, Serbia and France, it was royal again. In a short clip, the recently crowned King Charles III. (74) and his wife, Queen Camilla (75).

Andrew Lambrou (24), who competed for Cyprus with “Break A Broken Heart”, then elicited from Urban a “well trained and gave everything”. After the Spanish contribution, the eventual winner Loreen entered the stage and Albania was followed by Marco Mengoni (34) “Italo-Pop in a class”. After performances by Estonia, Finland, Czech Republic, Australia, Belgium, Armenia, Moldova, Ukraine and Norway, Lord of the Lost performed. The band around singer Chris Harms (43) gave everything, but the show with all kinds of fire elements was not very well received, even if Urban wanted a “sack full of points”. Lithuania, Israel, Slovenia, Croatia and Great Britain decided the live performances of the participants.

Sweden with an early lead

The final vote by the international juries and the TV audience were weighted equally. First, the points of the experts were announced. Sweden’s Loreen was able to take the lead early on – many of the juries gave it the maximum rating of twelve points. With 340 points, it should already be clear that Sweden would probably win the race. Israel (177 points) and Italy (176 points) ended up second and third respectively. Germany was without any points for a long time, but Iceland (2 points) and the Czech Republic (1 point) at least got three points.

The audience also gave Lord of the Lost only 15 points. With a total of 18 points, it was only enough for last place behind Great Britain (24 points) and Serbia (30 points). “I really would have hoped for more at my last ESC,” said Urban. “The band didn’t deserve this.” He didn’t know what it was either. Lord of the Lost are “absolute top class in their profession”.

There was another surprise in the audience voting. Italy (350 points) and Israel (362 points) only finished third and fourth. Finland’s Käärijä (29) received a fantastic 376 points from viewers – more than any other act. The musician (526 points in total) was able to fight his way up to second place. With a total of 583 points, Sweden still clearly won.

Ultimately, Urban wanted to say goodbye to the German viewers “very, very, very deeply”. After the Kalush Orchestra presented the trophy to Loreen and she performed her song “Tattoo” again, he said goodbye to the ESC. “Dear people in Germany, this was my last ESC comment […]”Explained Urban. Among other things, he just wanted to thank the teams he worked with, the other commentators and his family. Now he can watch the Eurovision Song Contest together with his loved ones. “It was me As always, a pleasure and a great honor.”
