The European Football Championship 2024 in Germany The German national team started the tournament with a furious opening victory against Scotland and finished first in the group against Switzerland in the last group game. 51 games in ten cities await fans at the European Championship: It started on June 14, 2024 in Munich, and the European Championship final will take place in Berlin on July 14.

European Football Championship 2024: The groups at a glance

Germany faced Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland in the preliminary round. The two strongest groups are Group B (Spain, Croatia, Italy and Albania) and Group D (Netherlands, Austria, France and Poland).

Under national coach Julian Nagelsmann, the DFB team won the opening match against an overwhelmed Scotland by a clear 5:1. A largely confident 2:0 victory followed against Hungary. In a hard-fought final group match against Switzerland, the national team equalized in injury time and won the group at the last second.

European Championship squad of the German national team

National coach Julian Nagelsmann is taking 26 players with him to the European Championships. The final squad had to be reported to UEFA by June 7th, and goalkeeper Alexander Nübel was the only player to be dropped from the provisional squad. The German national team’s European Championship squad at a glance (Status: 10.6.2024):

Thomas Müller has played the most international matches, followed by Manuel Neuer and Toni Kroos. In the opening match of the European Championship against Scotland, Müller made his 130th international appearance, equalling Lukas Podolski in the most international appearances, who is in third place in the all-time list behind Lothar Matthäus and Miro Klose.

Public viewing at the European Championships

Following a decision by the Federal Cabinet in March, public viewing events during the European Football Championship are also possible after 10 p.m. Since in many cases the noise protection standards cannot be met, the Federal Environment Ministry saw a temporary exception as necessary for the European Championship. A similar regulation had already been in place for the 2006 World Cup, among other events.

With the exception, large fan festivals will be possible again. For example, Berlin Around 2.5 million football fans from around 120 countries will be coming to the European Championships. For the European Championships, the Brandenburg Gate will be transformed into a giant football goal, and the Straße des 17. Juni will be turned into a fan mile with concerts and other supporting programmes.

The fan festival in Munich takes place in the Olympic Park, a screen for public viewing will be set up at the Olympic Lake. The supporting program includes concerts and small tournaments. Entry is free on all European Championship days.

The 2024 European Football Championship on TV

Telekom has secured the official broadcasting rights for the 2024 European Championship, meaning that all 51 European Championship games can be broadcast on MagentaTV Telekom plans to launch three of its own television channels for the European Championships. The first channel, “Fussball.TV 1,” went on air on April 15 and will show historical European Championship games, analyses and documentaries, among other things.

ARD and ZDF broadcast 34 games on free TV, including all matches of the German national team. In addition to the opening game between Germany and Scotland, both semi-finals and the European Championship final can be seen on free TV.
