Gina Lückenkemper missed the next coup at the European Athletics Championships in Rome. The defending champion came away empty-handed in the 100m final.

Gina Lückenkemper missed the chance to defend her 100m crown and also missed the hoped-for European Championship medal. The European champion from Munich came in fifth in the showdown of the European elite in Rome in 11.07 seconds. Gold went to Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith (10.99) ahead of the indoor vice world champion Ewa Swoboda from Poland. Bronze went to the Italian Zaynab Dosso (both 11.03).

“I am still completely fine with fifth place because the level in Europe has increased so much,” said Lückenkemper in the ARD: “The main focus is on Paris, on the Olympic Games.” She is aiming to reach the final there.

Mayer and Montag cancel start

Rebekka Haase was eliminated in sixth place in her semi-final in 11.35 seconds. Lisa Mayer canceled her start shortly before the semi-final due to muscular problems, and Jennifer Montag was also absent after having difficulties during the warm-up.

The only German sprinter to have won the 100 m European Championship more than once is Marlies Göhr, who triumphed three times in a row in 1978, 1982 and 1986. Until 2010, the European Championships took place every four years.
