Musiala and Gündoğan score for Germany, Neuer puts in a strong performance. Not with the ease of the opening match, but with a convincing, combative performance, the DFB team secures its ticket to the knockout rounds early.

lkay Gündoğan and Jamal Musiala hugged each other, then the two match winners went on the lap of honour together with their teammates and received the applause they deserved. The German European Championship party continues, the round of 16 is already booked for the German national football team – and the fans were already chanting during the 2-0 (1-0) win in the second group match against Hungary: “Berlin, Berlin, we’re going to Berlin!” In Germany, people are dreaming of the title.

After the match against Hungary, Manuel Neuer spoke of a “dominant start” and thus underlined his own performance, which saved the German team from falling behind after a bad pass right at the start of the game.

“Sovereign” victory for Germany

Toni Kroos describes the victory as “confident”, especially since he believes that the opponents Hungary were stronger than the Scots in the opening match.

“It feels like it’s getting better and better. But while it’s getting better, we have to overcome some difficulties,” summed up Gündoğan, who was voted player of the match. “In the second half, we played it down really coolly.”

“Thomas has a problem now, he has to play in the third game and can’t concentrate on golf,” jokes TV expert Bastian Schweinsteiger on ARD about his former teammate Thomas Müller after the German national team’s early qualification for the European Championship round of 16.

Julian Nagelsmann sums up: “A very unpleasant opponent, you have to win the game first. There were a lot of long balls, always four-on-four duels, which is not so pleasant. It is a good maturation process. (…) Overall, we won a lot of balls and quickly regained possession. (…) It was a good performance between the goalkeeper and the whole team, everyone gave their all. Everyone wants to keep a clean sheet, which is a very good sign. (…) We’ll see how everyone gets through. In general, I think it is important that we have many players from the first eleven back on the pitch. It may be that we make individual substitutions. As of now, I think everyone is healthy.”

Maximilian Mittelstädt is also confident: “It is important that we did not rest after the Scotland game. Everything was not perfect, we knew that we would not beat Hungary 5-0. I think it was another deserved victory and we now have to carry the euphoria that we have slowly sparked into the next games. (…) We have shown that we are on the right track. Everything is possible for us. We have put in a very good performance in two games. If we can confirm this performance in the next few weeks, we can achieve great things.”

On Sunday, Germany will play its last group match against Switzerland.
