In Group D, the top teams Austria, France and the Netherlands are fighting an exciting duel for first place on the last match day. The outcome is quite surprising.

Coach Ralf Rangnick is with Austria’s national football team has advanced to the round of 16 of the European Championship as group winners. The team defeated the Netherlands 3-2 (1-0) in Berlin on Tuesday and took first place in Group D on the last matchday. Second is France, which could only manage a 1-1 (0-0) draw against the already eliminated Poland in Dortmund. Despite the defeat, the Netherlands are assured of a place in the round of 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams in the group.

In the knockout round, Austria will now face the second-placed team in Group F on Tuesday in Leipzig, i.e. Turkey, the Czech Republic or Georgia. France will face the second-placed team in Group E on Monday in Düsseldorf. That could be Belgium, Ukraine, Romania or Slovakia. In any case, the Netherlands will face a group winner.

Sabitzer scores late winning goal for Austria

BVB professional Marcel Sabitzer shot the Austrians to victory in Berlin shortly before the end (80th minute). An own goal by Dortmund’s Donyell Malen (6th) gave Austria the lead. Shortly after the break, Cody Gakpo (47th) completed a quick counterattack by the Elftal to equalize. Bremen’s Romano Schmid (59th) for Austria and the much-criticized Memphis Depay (75th) then scored before Sabitzer finished from a tight angle.

France took the lead with a penalty kick from the superstar when Kylian Mbappé returned to the starting line-up after breaking his nose (56′). Former Bundesliga striker Robert Lewandowski also equalized for Poland with a penalty kick (79′).
