Nicolas Schmit does not want to fight transport service platforms like Uber or delivery services like Deliveroo, this clarification is important to the EU Social Commissioner: “The EU is not against these business models or against having a pizza delivered at eleven in the evening,” he says Luxembourg Social Democrat. “But the man who brings the pizza has rights and should be as well protected as other employees.” Schmit will present an explosive draft law against bogus self-employment in popular online services in Brussels this Thursday. Up to 4.1 million people in the EU who allegedly drive self-employed passengers, deliver food or do cleaning, could in future be considered employees thanks to the directive. They would then benefit from minimum wages, paid vacation, and social security protection.
