EU asylum reform: Federal government sees open borders “in danger” – Politics

Despite harsh criticism, the federal government wants to push ahead with tightening the EU asylum rules. The German position for a summit this week envisages that asylum procedures can be at least partially relocated to the external borders of the EU in order to curb illegal migration. “Reliable control of the EU’s external borders is crucial so that we can remain a Europe of open borders inside – and thus maintain one of the very central achievements of the EU,” said Interior Minister Nancy Faeser Süddeutsche Zeitung and warns urgently: “Otherwise the Schengen area is in serious danger.”
