The first kings were dead kings, the British anthropologist Arthur Maurice Hocart conjectured. Many readers thought this was late Victorian eccentricity. However, Hocart held that kings represented the effort to bring the cosmic forces into the realm of society, and that they were not fully accomplished until they left this world.
