Eschede: This is how the head of operations at the time experienced the rescue operation

After the ICE accident in Eschede 25 years ago, Gerd Bakeberg was head of operations for the rescue services. In an interview with the star he talks about the biggest challenges back then and how he processed what he experienced.

On June 3, 1998, 101 people died when an ICE derailed in Eschede. How and where did you get the message?
I received the alert at my workplace in Celle, 15 kilometers away. At first it was said: Eschede train accident, Rebberlaher Straße. I couldn’t imagine the extent of what awaited me at the end of the day.
