A bicycle and a backpack are all that were found near a mountain tunnel in the Ore Mountains. But because the owner cannot be reached, rescuers are on duty.

In a mine tunnel Erzgebirge is looking for a missing man. A large contingent of police and fire departments are on duty. A backpack and a bicycle belonging to a 34-year-old were found in front of a disused tunnel near Annaberg-Buchholz (Erzgebirgskreis), a police spokesman said upon request. The tunnel was found open.

Since the owner of the items could not be reached by phone or at his usual place of residence, a search was underway for the man in the relatively large tunnel. “We assume he could be there.” Several media outlets reported on the search operation in Saxony. The police could not say whether the man was an amateur archaeologist or treasure hunter. There is no missing person report for him.

Tunnels in the Erzgebirge are being checked

While checking the tunnel, emergency services came across a suspicious object that could not be moved. It is a self-made cylindrical metal object. He will be rendered “harmless” by experts. The police spokesman did not want to say whether this might contain explosive material or other dangerous content, citing the ongoing operation. Experts from the responsible mining authority are also on site.

According to “Bild”, someone is said to have noticed on Tuesday that the shutter to a disused tunnel in a forest area was open.
