The earthquake in the border region between Turkey and Syria was so strong that even in Germany the ground rose and fell by up to five millimeters. The seismograms show this without a doubt. The region on the Turkish-Syrian border is considered one of the most active earthquake zones in the world. In this crumple zone, several tectonic plates meet, which push past each other, get stuck with each other and build up tension – which eventually discharges violently. The North Anatolian Fault, which stretches across the north of the country, is particularly well known. Again and again there are strong vibrations. Such an earthquake is also expected in the area of the metropolis of Istanbul – nobody knows when.
