Environmental activists color Venice’s Grand Canal green

Something to spice up the photos. This Saturday, environmental activists from the Extinction Rebellion (XR) group dumped coloring products into the Grand Canal of Venice and several rivers in Italy to protest against the “failure” of COP28 on the climate.

In the middle of the afternoon, activists spread a fluorescent green liquid in the Grand Canal of Venice, among passers-by, gondolas and tourists, according to images posted on social networks.

“We are hanging by a thread”

At the same time, activists hanging on ropes and harnesses unfurled a banner from the famous Rialto Bridge, which read “COP28: while the government speaks, we hang on by a thread.”

XR Italy indicated on X (formerly Twitter) that it had spread fluorescina (fluorescein in French), a “harmless” dye. “The climate crisis is already having disastrous impacts on Italian territory, science tells us that it will get worse and politics is wasting time with farces,” lamented the group.

“We revolt against this inaction, we cannot remain silent while our future is sold to fossil fuel industries! »

Rome, Milan and Turin also targeted

Similar actions were carried out in the Tiber in Rome, in a canal in Milan as well as in the Po in Turin, according to images posted on social networks.

This action comes three days before the end of the UN climate conference, which is being held in Dubai, in the midst of negotiations on the exit of oil, gas and coal while OPEC tries to slow down the dynamic against fossil energies.

In May, environmental activists had already colored the basin of the famous Trevi Fountain in Rome black after deadly floods in northeastern Italy which they said constituted a “warning” about climate change.
