According to the EU Commission President, the blackmail of the Russian President had failed. The EU is now “stronger and more independent” than ever when it comes to energy supply.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is convinced that Russian President Vladimir Putin has failed to blackmail Europe by reducing energy supplies.

“Putin has clearly lost the energy battle he started, and his blackmail didn’t work,” the politician told the German Press Agency and other media during a visit to the Troll A gas production platform off Norway’s west coast.

She stressed that the EU is now getting much more energy from allies like Norway and the US. In addition, Europe has invested massively in renewable energies and reduced energy consumption by 20 percent.

“So if President Putin planned to bring us to our knees, he has achieved exactly the opposite. Today we are stronger and more independent than we have ever been.”
