Due to the enormous rise in gas prices, the energy group e.on is currently no longer signing any new contracts with private customers. Other providers have already reacted to the extreme market development.
Anyone who currently wants to change their gas supplier has one less option for the time being: the Essen-based energy group e.on is not accepting any new customers for the time being due to the sharp rise in prices. “Unfortunately we are currently unable to offer you any natural gas products,” says the company’s website without any further explanation. e.on is one of the ten largest gas suppliers in Germany.
New pricing model in progress
A company spokesman emphasized that existing customers were not affected, they would continue to be supplied. The group will also continue to fulfill its tasks as a basic supplier. These suppliers step in if other suppliers fail to ensure the gas supply to the households concerned.

The company left it open when e.on would make an offer to new customers again. First a product had to be designed that would do justice to current developments on the gas markets, it said. The offers from e.on have also been removed from the comparison portals Verivox and Check24. According to experts, the high gas prices make it difficult for providers to calculate prices reliably.
Wholesale prices multiplied
The Baden-Württemberg energy group EnBW has also had its offers withdrawn from the comparison portals. The supplier said that they were still offering new gas contracts. Customers do not have to fear a delivery stop. Individual suppliers had previously announced this drastic measure. The Rheinische Elektrizitäts- und Gasversorgungsgesellschaft sent electricity customers in several federal states letters of termination.
In the past few months, the wholesale prices for gas have climbed to record highs internationally. According to the comparison portal Check 24, the cost of the megawatt hour of gas rose by 451 percent to EUR 44.03 within a year. The big gas suppliers buy long-term, however, so that price jumps on the stock exchange do not have an immediate impact.
The federal government rejected fears that there could be gas bottlenecks in winter. “The security of supply in Germany is still high,” said a spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of Economics. “We don’t see any supply bottlenecks at the moment.” Nevertheless, the situation is being monitored continuously.
