In the spring of 1945, looking for something to eat in the glove compartment of an American truck almost didom 13-year-old Günther Heinrich. Nevertheless, he still has fond memories of the occupation.
Günther Heinrich experienced the end of the war and the American invasion of Starnberg as a 13-year-old – a boy full of energy who felt little fear despite the terrible war years. The 91-year-old was born in Munich. His family had a joinery and carpentry business there, as well as a small weekend cottage in Starnberg, so that he and his two sisters had a connection to the lake and its shores from an early age. Today Heinrich lives in Perchting. He speaks to the SZ about what happened at the end of April 1945.
