The EU wants to oblige WhatsApp and other providers to scan their users’ communications for images of abuse. Threema is already threatening to withdraw from Europe.
The so-called opt-in procedure is actually a good thing for people who do something on the Internet. Opt-in means that, for example, a provider like Whatsapp first asks its users for their explicit consent before introducing a function in its app. For users, this is better than opt-out – when the provider introduces something and users have to take action themselves to object.
