Empty battery saves senior from scammers – Bavaria

An elderly woman’s dead cell phone battery has put a spanner in the works for scammers. According to police reports on Thursday, the previously unknown persons had persuaded the 79-year-old from Memmingen in Swabia to withdraw 50,000 euros from her bank account. The perpetrators wanted to call the woman on her mobile phone to hand over the money on Tuesday – but the battery was dead.

According to the police, the elderly woman was looking for a socket in her bank. In a conversation with an employee, it then turned out that scammers wanted to rob the woman of her savings. According to the information, they had told the elderly woman on the phone that her daughter was involved in a car accident and that only paying 50,000 euros could avert arrest – a common scam that many older people still fall for, as the police emphasized . Because of the empty cell phone battery and the attentive bank employee, the scam was discovered in good time.
