Hundreds of employees of German institutions have to leave Russia, including diplomats, teachers and employees of the Goethe Institute. But that should not be the end of the escalation.

The spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry in Moscow, Maria Zakharova, indulged in dark insinuations in April after a double-digit number of Russian diplomats left the country in a government plane at the urging of the Foreign Office. The “entire range of Russian-German relations” will be “defiantly destroyed”. In response to “Berlin’s hostile actions”, Russia will significantly limit the upper limit for employees in German diplomatic missions in Russia.
