Emmanuel Macron promises “a security response as soon as possible”

Emmanuel Macron tried to reassure the population of Mayotte on Wednesday, where violent clashes between rival gangs have been occurring for several days. “We are now going to launch much more vigorous work with the Comoros to stop the departures” of migrants, explained the president, challenged by elected officials from the archipelago during his visit to the Mayors’ Fair at the Parc des Expositions de la Porte de Versailles, in Paris.

“We are also going to put more military resources at sea to be able to avoid arrivals,” he added, adding that he had “spoken in recent days” with the President of the Comoros, Azali Assoumani.

The State appeals to the Raid

The Head of State also recalled the government’s decision to deploy the Raid, the elite police intervention unit, to Mayotte following the violent clashes. “Faced with this phenomenon, we will first have a security response as quickly as possible, then cooperation but with a lot of force (with the Comoros), and thirdly we must continue the in-depth work of reforms on Mayotte, because we can clearly see that today our situation, our rules, must be adapted to the reality on the ground”, he assured.

This French department in the Indian Ocean, which has been the scene for several days of violence between young people from rival neighborhoods provoked by the murder of one of them, is counting on the arrival of police reinforcements to try to stem the phenomenon.
