Emergency patient found hanged with alarm bell next to hospital



He walked out of the emergency room in hospital pajamas without anyone noticing. A few minutes later, this patient treated at the Rennes University Hospital was found dead near the Pontchaillou station stop located a few dozen meters from the hospital.

Psychologically fragile, this man in his fifties hanged himself with the alarm bell he had stolen from the emergency room. Alerted, the SAMU and the firefighters could do nothing to save him, noting his death. The scene, which took place Monday, August 23, “shocked” the staff, who proclaim their “fed up”. The victim’s family was alerted on the morning of August 24 by the police.

He left the emergency room without anyone noticing

According to our information, this patient had been admitted shortly before 7 p.m. to the emergency room for suspected drug overdose and drowsiness. The day before, this man had already been admitted to the emergency room in Pontchaillou at the request of his relatives, who were worried about his “dark thoughts”. He had been transferred to the Guillaume-Régnier psychiatric hospital, also in Rennes. It was there that a drug treatment had been administered to him. Seeing the patient’s drowsiness, the staff of the psychiatric hospital requested his transfer to the emergency room, where he arrived by ambulance a little before 7 p.m., when the shift between the day and night shift was taking place.

The patient was able to leave the emergency room without anyone noticing, before being found dead around 8 p.m. His file opened the day before “nevertheless mentioned his suicidal thoughts”, specifies a source. According to our information, no member of the emergency personnel had noticed the departure of this man until the call of the SAMU warning of his dead death. Contacted, the management of the hospital denied and explained that the night shift “noted the patient’s absence around 7:30 pm, during his surveillance tour. A search in and in front of the emergencies was carried out in the wake ”. The management adds “to offer its condolences to the family and assures them of their support in this ordeal”.

“If we had more staff”

For their part, the caregivers accuse “the understaffed” and denounce “their fed up”. “This drama was preventable. We have been alerting to the lack of resources and beds for months, and no one has listened to us. If we had more staff, we could better supervise our patients ”, testifies a member of the emergency staff to 20 minutes. Present at the scene, the police opened an investigation.

This summer, activity was very sustained within the emergencies of the Rennes University Hospital, at a time when it usually weaker. The unit sometimes saw more than 200 patients per day. Figures comparable to big winter days. “Sometimes we don’t have time to welcome people in good conditions. We get to the point because there are ten or fifteen people waiting behind. We have people everywhere in the corridors, it’s like a mill ”, testifies another caregiver.
