Parts of the Carola Bridge in Dresden collapsed into the Elbe in the middle of the night. The other parts of the bridge are now being analyzed.

In the city Dresden has been dealing with the condition of the now partially collapsed bridge for years. That is why bridge sections A and B of the Carola Bridge have already been renovated, said Holger Kalbe, head of department at the Dresden Road and Civil Engineering Office. “It was not foreseeable that the condition of bridge section C would be so bad that it collapsed. You just can’t be inside a structure like that.” Now it is important to rule out any danger to the other two parts of the bridge. A condition analysis is being carried out for this purpose.

For reasons still unknown, part of the Carola Bridge collapsed early in the morning. No one was injured. The concrete structure, built during the GDR era, is one of five north-south connections across the river in the state capital that can be used by vehicles and trams.
