Germany leads 1-0 at half-time in the second group match of the European Championship at home against Hungary (in the LIVETICKER). Jamal Musiala put the DFB in the lead after 22 minutes. Shortly afterwards, the Germans had Manuel Neuer to thank for securing the lead with a save. Teammates, commentators and fans were delighted. “Manu saves him brilliantly,” said Bastian Schweinsteiger during the break in the ARD.
What happened? In the 25th minute, Hungary were awarded a free kick directly in front of the German penalty area. Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai flicked the ball past the wall, but Neuer just managed to scrape it out of the corner. He then reacted quickly and blocked the follow-up shot.

“Manuel Neuer – outstanding save! Everyone on him immediately!” cheered ARDCommentator Tom Bartels said directly. In fact, his teammates ran to Neuer immediately after the scene and thanked him. Joshua Kimmich in particular celebrated his Bayern teammate.
Even after the replay, Bartels was completely thrilled: “Fantastic save by Neuer.” ARDExpert Almuth Schult added: “It’s so important that he gets his hands on it. Even more important that he gets his feet on it in the second action. He’s rightly being celebrated.”
Also in the half-time analysis at MagentaTV there was praise. Michael Ballack said of the scene: “He waits a long time. It’s a really stupid ball for the goalkeeper – you don’t know if he’ll get to it. With his experience he’ll do it well, of course. But you still have to hold it first. Then he reacted well with his foot. Great so far!”
Tabea Kemme, a former German footballer, agreed with him: “Two world class goals, definitely. He comes over the wall with great power, Neuer is there. You can see that he still wants to grab it, but the ball has such power. But he’s back there quickly and clears the follow-up shot.”
There was also praise for Germany’s number one on social media. Some users on X compared him directly to a wall that was built in the DFB goal. Even a fan page for Arsenal FC acknowledged: “Manuel Neuer is the best goalkeeper of all time. No one can convince me of that.” Another user even wrote that a picture of the Neuer parade could be exhibited as a work of art in the Louvre.
And this despite the fact that Neuer has recently been the subject of severe criticism. Several mistakes had reignited the discussion about Germany’s number one goalkeeper. But with this save, Neuer silenced his critics.
