Admittedly, it’s not always appropriate to throw foreign words around, and you don’t always aim to look like a little Einstein. Because that can sometimes come across as not very authentic.
However, there are situations where we wish to be able to stand out through our language, for example in job interviews or upscale events. In case you’re not already using them, here are a few magic words that will make you seem pretty smart.
1. Eloquent
Use this word and you are automatically one yourself. Because eloquent means “eloquent” and increases the IQ by 100 percent!
2. Obsolete
“It’s not usual anymore!” you can replace it with “That’s obsolete” from time to time.
3. Tangent
The sentence “That affects me peripherally” has already achieved cult status. So that it doesn’t seem silly, you can just say “That doesn’t actually affect me”. Translated it means: “It doesn’t bother me / doesn’t concern me”.
4. Adequate
Deeming something “adequate” instead of “fitting” or “reasonable” automatically sounds like an intelligence beast!
5. Aversion
Sure, there’s nothing wrong with an honest “I think football sucks”. But there are situations where “I have an aversion to football” might be more appropriate – and much more effective!
6. Conversation
“I just wanted to make conversation.” Sounds a lot smarter than “I just wanted to chat a bit”.
7. Imply
“That implies he likes dogs” is a nice alternative to “That automatically means he likes dogs”.
8. Torpedo
If someone wants to specifically prevent something, he “torpedoes” something. Sounds a lot smarter with a foreign word, doesn’t it?
9. Recalcitrant
He never actually does what the boss says? Then he is “unruly” We think: pretty cool word to look smarter!
